Germany Legalizes Recreational Cannabis

German consumers are saying “guten tag!” to cannabis now that recreational cannabis is legalized. In February 2024, lawmakers in Germany approved a plan that would allow for adults over the age of eighteen to safely possess and consume cannabis. Karl Lauterbach, the Health Minister of Germany, positioned this move around the fight against the unregulated cannabis market. Lauterbach’s positioning is particularly interesting, as he has admitted that he’s has been opposed to legalizing cannabis for a long time. As more research takes place, Lauterbach has identified that removing the taboo around cannabis and educating the public on safe use is the correct approach to this substance. Germany’s groundbreaking movement for cannabis reform comes on the heels of Malta and Luxembourg’s legalization policies.

As of April 1, 2024, Germany now allows for adults at the age of eighteen and above:

  • Adults may possess up to 25 grams of cannabis in public and 50 grams of cannabis at their residence
  • Individuals may grow up to three cannabis plants at home
  • As of July 1, 2024, adults may join cannabis clubs where they can purchase up to 25 grams of cannabis per day (maximum 50 grams per month)
  • Adults under the age of 21 may only purchase up to 30 grams of cannabis per month
  • Clubs may only have 500 registered members
  • Adults may not join multiple clubs

More details on the cannabis club regulations and restrictions will emerge as we approach their open dates later this summer.

German lawmakers are adamant on cannabis marketing is not focused or aimed at children in any way and plan on refining marketing laws as the industry rolls out.

Germany’s legalization of cannabis is a huge movement for not only Europe, but the international landscape of cannabis normalization. Blazing in Berlin or getting the munchies in Munich has never looked so güd.
