Two very exciting new initiatives have moved forward in the New York cannabis scene and it’s shaping up to make cannabis more accessible than ever in the Empire State.
On Wednesday, July 19th, 2023, the Cannabis Control Board in New York State approved over 212 provisional Conditional Adult-Use Retail Dispensary (CAURD) licenses. These licenses are specifically created as social equity measures and are available to applicants who have personally or within their family experienced low-level cannabis offenses. With these new licenses available, the total amount of CAURD licenses to 463 throughout the state. This is in contrast to the existing twenty (20) actively operating licensed dispensaries in New York. While New Yorkers eagerly await these licenses to come to fruition, an additional initiative was moved forward to drive more sales.
This initiative is called the Cannabis Growers’ Showcase and was originally announced in May. The Cannabis Growers’ Showcase would allow for sales of cannabis at farmers markets or other locations and gatherings. Within the regulations of the Cannabis Growers’ Showcase, there would need to be additional permits to sell medicated product, product cannot be marked up over a certain amount, and a minimum of three cultivators would need to participate with a licensed retailer.
With more licenses and more opportunities to purchase cannabis, New Yorkers are setting up their cannabis community for success.
