Washington D.C. Opens Additional Round Of Cannabis Retail Licenses

Washington D.C. has one of the more interesting cannabis markets in the United States. In May 2010, the District of Columbia legalized cannabis for medical use. In February 2015, recreational cannabis was legalized however no recreational cannabis facilities have been awarded licenses to date. For nearly ten years, the recreational cannabis market in Washington D.C. has existed with no regulatory framework for businesses to operate. There is, however, regulatory framework for the medical cannabis market through the Alcohol Beverage and Cannabis Administration (ABCA) and that exists as the only truly legal cannabis market in Washington D.C. at this time.

Thankfully, Washington D.C. is issuing thirty-three new cannabis retail licenses and two more internet licenses very soon.

Cannabis retail licenses are for medical dispensaries, and internet licenses are for retailers without a storefront and offer delivery services. Not all regions have internet licenses or any equivalent available.

The application period for these retail and internet licenses opens on July 1, 2024, at 9:00AM EST. Applications are going to be accepted on a first-come basis.

This application round will also not include social equity applications- this is a period for regular applicators. Regular operators can apply for either standard or conditional licenses for their business. A conditional license allows the applicant one year to get all materials and business resources in place prior to opening, but conditional licenses cannot be sold. Standard licenses must have all business resources and materials in place prior to opening doors but can be sold in the future.

The application period opens on July 1, 2024, and ends on August 29, 2024.
