The History Of 710

As we approach July 10th we are constantly surrounded with talk about cannabis extracts- but what does that mean to 710 and for cannabis consumers and operators?

710 is perhaps one of the cheekiest cannabis celebrations in our calendar, and it comes from turning the word ‘OIL’ upside down. Due to the correlation to oil, it has evolved into being a cannabis holiday celebrating all things cannabis concentrates. It becomes a day of deals on concentrates, vape cartridges and pens, and of course concentrate accessories.

Unlike the history of 420, with highly debated and untraceable historic timestamps, 710’s major origins can be more clearly rooted to the creation of the first 710 cup in 2012. This industry event stemmed from the adult use legalization movement through Washington in Colorado and was focused on just judging concentrate varieties. Naturally there were references to concentrates as 710 prior to 2012, but with the largely publicized event 710 found its permanent place in cannabis that year. It has also since 2012 ignited curiosity in the cannabis community about cannabis oils and extracts as a category.

Cannabis oils can be extracted from plants several different ways, and they are often higher in both THC and terpenes than cannabis flower. With higher THC percentages and a higher retention of terpenes, cannabis concentrates are on average more potent and powerful to consume than simply combustible cannabis flower. Cannabis concentrates may also require additional equipment to consume versus a joint which just needs a flame.

Concentrates can be consumed with vape devices such as e-nails, vaporizers, or if you are brave, simple butter knives. Putting cannabis concentrates directly on top of flower in bowls has entered the lexicon along with the rise of infused pre-rolls. Since the large establishment of 710 in 2012, all of these methods except for butter knives have risen in popularity and have become more and more accessible. 710 has naturally become a time for vaporizer or concentrate consumption devices to go on sale, so look out for sales from brands that sell 510 batteries for vape cartridges or devices that melt concentrate at high temperatures.
